Welcome to Santorini

Santorini, the southernmost member of the Cyclades islands complex in the Aegean Sea, is yet another internationally adored and much celebrated Greek island that barely needs an introduction. People literally travel from any and every corner of the world just to get a glimpse of the Caldera of Santorini, and perhaps take an occasional photo or two. This fantastic view over the Caldera, in essence the part of the volcano that sank following the last eruption, is as unique as the rest of this extremely impressive volcanic landscape.

Santorini or Thira Island was once the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and its present form and shape is actually a submerged volcano and a caldera. Simply mentioning its name can often bring to mind stunning sunsets and highly impressive scenery, unique white, red and black sand beaches, impressive traditional houses, verandas and patios giving the sense of literally hanging from the cliff, offering unpararrelled, direct stunning views of the volcano and the whole caldera.

One of the reasons responsible for the fame and glory Santorini enjoys globally, is its astonishing sunsets. The colors that streak the sky change from lilac to deep purple, from yellow to orange and then to red, as the golden sun dissappears in the horizon, while reflecting its light on to the sea and the surrounding islets.

An idyllic destination, Santorini offers relaxation, but also numerous activities and a very lively nightlife. Quaint and skillfully preserved traditional villages have been constructed on the edge of the caldera, by employing the typically simple and authentic, yet so charming Cycladic architecture, and boasting breathtaking views towards the Aegean Sea. Some of the villages are very cosmopolitan, while other are more peaceful. Surrounded by vast vineyards and whitewashed cliff-top towns with castles boasting amazing views out over the Aegean, one will feel truly immersed in the mesmerising vibes of this wonderful island.

The village of Fira is probably the most popular, offering a wide range of restaurants and bars. The splendid views, the delicious local specialities enjoyed with the locally produced and widely celebrated Vinsanto wine, and the relaxed atmosphere all set the stage for a highly enjoyable experience.  The island’s wonderful wineries are certainly worth visiting for a private wine tasting and an introduction to Santorini’s most indigenous and most impressive varieties.

Megalochori on the other hand (meaning ‘large village’) is very rich in history and culture, and one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Its existence has been traced all the way back to the 17th century. It is known for its famous pirate hideaway spots, wine canavas and impressive historical mansions and traditional houses.

These are rich in idiosyncratic architectural features like high ceilings, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, whose function was both to ensure privacy as well as protect against pirates that regularly raided the island during medieval times. Megalochori also has a great history history of trade and commerce, as the prosperous land barons systematically exported the famous Vinsanto wine still produced to this day, across the globe and to lands far beyond.

Oia is a preserved traditional coastal village on the island of Santorini. It has evolved into a bucket list destination for many international visitors, and is certainly one of the most photographed and adored areas in Greece, if not the globe. Fortunately, that has not taken away any of the authentic charm and traditional character of the village, it has just added extra features and superior quality provisions and services for you to enjoy in this quaintly wonderful part of the island.

Oia is characterised by charmingly whitewashed cave houses, many manor houses dating back to the 1800’s and more than 60 churches with the characteristic blue domes found on most Greek Islands. Moreover, Oia has become a synonym of superior quality vacationing and style in recent years, and that is also evident in the breadth and quality of services provided in the area. Whether seeking quality accommodation, wining & dining, experiences and/or activities, even shopping, you will certainly feel spoiled for choice.

Last but certainly not least, the traditional picturesque village of Pyrgos (meaning tower), literally a ‘no cars-allowed’ zone, is built amphitheatrically on a hill that offers magnificent views of the island in almost all directions. It is worth noting that it was once the first capital of the island. Its name was ‘Kallisti’ (meaning the beautiful one) at the time. Need we say more?

This area of the island has maintained all its traditional elements, boasting medieval narrow streets, fortified walls, and hidden passages, all combined with the unique Cycladic local architecture.

Pyrgos boasts a rich history and today is home to many taverns and wine bars, galleries and boutiques, not to mention amazing restored buildings. Some are available for visitors to book, and experience life here just as the locals did for centuries. All in all, Pyrgos is therefore a village rich in history and culture, widely celebrated and adored both by locals and visitors alike.
