Athens City Spring Break

Spring can be a fantastic time to travel generally. Travelling to certain specific destinations during this inspiring season however, can certainly upscale the experience, and spice it up with an air of freshness and vivid colours.

One such spring-friendly destination is certainly Athens, the capital of Greece. The whole city literally blossoms in colourful joy during spring. The temperature is simply ideal, embracing visitors with a vibe that is quite different from the busy summer season.

Temperatures in April and May usually tend to remain in the 18-22 °C range, with the occasional year where they might reach fairly higher. A superbly revitalising pre-season swim is therefore certainly on the table, allowing one to fully enjoy the sea and sun in some ideally less crowded sandy beach of their choice.

That’s right! That is yet another unique perk available for springtime visitors. As most Greeks tend to start enjoying their swim later in the season, usually by late May or June, you may just enjoy a plethora of fantastic beaches in close proximity without the hustle and bustle that larger crowds bring to the experience.

After all, the Athens Riviera offers such tantalising opportunities for swimming, from the affluent and trendy coastal suburb of Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, all the way to Cape Sounion, where one can dip just below the imposing Temple of Poseidon.

That is however just one among many perks that this constantly evolving and generous capital offers visitors. A rich selection of entertainment choices are available to the avid traveller, with a super wide collection of cafes, restaurants, clubs and wine bars of all shapes, sizes, styles and vibes ready to cater to your every taste and need.

Whether in the actual city itself, on the Riviera, or in one of the more northern leafy suburbs of town, one will never run out of exciting and ineresting choices. The mild weather provides the perfect excuse for strolling and taking in the refreshing energy emmitted by a Mediterranean city that is just coming out of winter time, and slowly but willfully embracing the summer vibes appearing on the horizon.

An eclectic collection of international brands and local boutiques is available in most vicinities, with the upscale suburbs of Kifissia in the leafy and mountainous north, beachside and vibrant Glyfada in the south, as well as the equally prestigious Kolonaki district in the city centre, usually trending in preference. Off course sightseeing is always on the table. Yet again however, this will be done without the hassle of crowds, queues and large numbers of tourists taking away from the authenticity and practical comfort of the experience.

An ideal season to visit the renowned Ancient Acropolis of Athens and to enjoy a stroll down to the historic ancient district of Plaka. This is a neighborhood that has literally stood there for millenia right below the Rock of the Acropolis and the majestic Temple of Parthenon, a timeless landmark of the city itself.

Should the weather take a different turn on a specific day, there are also plenty of indoor destinations for you to enjoy time at, again leaving you spoilt for choice. The central Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, leading to the building of the Greek Parliament (in fact it is less known that this was the old Royal Palace), the National Gardens (planted in the early 18th century by Queen Amalia herself), and the famous Syntagma Square, host a number of superb museums.

The Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Athens War Museum, the Christian and Byzantine Museum, and the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation can enrich your day and cultural senses no matter the weather outside. A short walk away, between Syntagma Square and Plaka, sits the contemporary Acropolis Museum, boasting an elegant roof terrace cafe with breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the wider Athens city centre.

Athens is therefore the place to visit during spring, an exciting and very promising choice for those springtime breaks and adventures, whether this is a weekend city break or a more lengthy visit. I may take a step further to say that spring is in fact the ideal time to visit the city of Atnens in order to appreciate all it has to offer. And that list of merits on offer is as rich as the city’s history, as well as its revitalising and remarkable more contemporary vibes.
